The Cultural Center of the Philippines was created in 1966 through Executive Order no. 30, with the purpose of promoting and preserving Filipino arts and culture. It was formally inaugurated on September 8, 1969, starting a three month long inaugural festival opened by the epic musical Dularawan. Since then, the CCP has sought to truly embody its logo of katotohanan (truth), kagandahan (beauty) and kabutihan (goodness). The best artists from all over the country and around the world have graced the CCP theaters and galleries, enthralling Filipinos for over thirty years.

14 June-12 August
WITH PASSION AND PURPOSE, PHOTOGRAPHS BY RICK ROCAMORA AND ARTIST TALK

The images by San Francisco-based photographer Rick Rocamora focus on the “people he wants us to look at and think about.” Selected black and white photographs represent the various series Rocamora has been pursuing since taking on a career as a documentary photographer in the 1980s. These include the series America’s Second-Class Veterans that captured the plight of the Filipino war veterans. In his regular visits to the Philippines, Rocamora explored themes focusing on the homeless, informal settlers, the maternity ward and the Japayukis. At times, personal bonds are established with his subjects. He is able to capture images that are poignant but not necessarily hopeless conditions.

TATLONG TABING: THREE PLAYS BY TONY PEREZ (Sierra Lakes, Bombita, Nobyembre, Noong Akala Ko’y Mahal Kita)
Category: theater

Tony Perez, who has spent over two decades eloquently dissecting the Filipino Psyche, is an important playwright in contemporary Philippine drama. A prolific playwright with several volumes of published works, his plays deal with adult themes such as intense love, betrayal, separation, compassion, poverty, hunger, marriage, birth, and death. This trilogy traces his artistic development as a playwright. Sierra Lakes is a tension-filled play that explores issues among four people caught in a complicated web of love and desire. Bombita is a black comedy which questions the blind obedience and subservience behavior of young rookies in the military. Funny, but almost in a pathetic way, it reveals the emotional and intellectual challenges of our men in uniform. A psychological drama, Nobyembre, Noong Akala Ko’y Mahal Kita is the second play in the multi-awarded playwright’s thought-provoking trilogy about love, friendship and companionship, and their consequences in our lives.

Exhibits

CCP DAKDAKAN: KULO is an open forum on KULÔ which is an exhibition of artworks by selected alumni artists of the University of Santo Tomas. The artworks, old and new, contribute to the discourses of the penand the sword, education and revolution—topics that have implicated Filipinothinkers and artists, who are consciousof the historical occasion and dialogue between Jose Rizal’s 150th birthday and the country’s oldest university’s 400th year celebration as an educational institution. One of the works, Poleteismo by Mideo Cruz, in Kulo has sparked a controversy and elicited protest from individuals and groups, calling for the removal of the work and even closure of the exhibit. Two constitutional rights have come into collision through this issue. On one hand is of course the artist’s freedom of expression, against which stands the complaint that the artwork is deemed to discriminate against religious belief. In recognition of such valid concerns, the CCP has organized this open forum. Educators, representatives of religious organizations, art practitioner and experts on culture and law will be invited to set the points of analysis and study with the aim of promoting exchange, and more importantly, the commitment for tolerance in both areas of art and religious practice. Dakdakan is an educational program of the CCP Visual Arts and Museo Division. The forum is free and open to the public, within the recommended capacity of the venue. Confirmation and seat reservation are encouraged.

Bulwagang Juan Luna (CCP Main Gallery)

MANHID first solo exhibition by Ronald Jeresano, delves into that fragile space between holding back and losing control of one’s emotion: one that he defines as numbness. For Jeresano, numbness could be the fleeting prelude to depression or breakdown, but it is still a precious and reflective moment where a sense of beauty, strength and order could nonetheless be grasped and understood. Jeresano’s works are distinguished by the play of solidity and fluidity in figuration, more recently expressed through the rendition of bubbles which take the form of various image and text to propel the artist’s social commentary. Among his many awards and recognitions, Jeresano is a Grand Prize winner of both the Metrobank MADE in 2008 and the ArtPetron competition in 2007 and 2008. This exhibition is presented in cooperation with Nineveh Artspace.

Cesar Hernando’s Mula Sa Mga ANINONG GUMAGALAW: Behind The Scenes 1971-2001 collects snapshots taken by the artist over the course of three decades working in Philippine cinema. A Fine Arts graduate from the University of Santo Tomas, he began as assistant director to National Artist Ishmael Bernal for his debut feature, Pagdating sa Dulo (1971). Later on, he would garner accolades and awards for his meticulously researched and imaginative designs for Mike de Leon’s Kisapmata (1981) and AKO Batch ’81 (1982) as well as for Maryo J. de los Reyes Tagos ng Dugo (1987) starring Vilma Santos. But aside from the mainstream, he was also a key figure in the underground cinema of the 1980’s—a precursor to the “indie” scene in the 2000’s—by collaborating with a new generation of filmmakers including Palm D’ Or recipient, Raymond Red. He would do production design on the latter’s first full length feature, Bayani (1993). Hernando would also design Lav Diaz’s five-hour film, Batang West Side (2001). Hernando has done some short feature films in 35mm like Maalinsangan ang Gabi (1993), Motorsiklo (2001), and Kagat ng Dilim (2006) starring Piolo Pascual. He is also a graphic designer and a professor at the University of the Philippines’ College of Fine Arts.

The term aninong gumagalaw is a literal translation in Filipino of “moving shadows” and was commonly used to refer to motion pictures in the ‘30s and ‘40s.  All the images in the exhibition were all photographed using film. Likewise, all of the movies from where these images were taken were shot on Super 8 and 35mm films

Aninong Gumagalaw is one of the events of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition being held at the CCP and Greenbelt from July 15-24, 2011.
