The Cultural Center of the Philippines was created in 1966 through Executive Order no. 30, with the purpose of promoting and preserving Filipino arts and culture. It was formally inaugurated on September 8, 1969, starting a three month long inaugural festival opened by the epic musical Dularawan. Since then, the CCP has sought to truly embody its logo of katotohanan (truth), kagandahan (beauty) and kabutihan (goodness). The best artists from all over the country and around the world have graced the CCP theaters and galleries, enthralling Filipinos for over thirty years.

WITH PASSION AND PURPOSE, PHOTOGRAPHS BY RICK ROCAMORA AND ARTIST TALK

The images by San Francisco-based photographer Rick Rocamora focus on the “people he wants us to look at and think about.” Selected black and white photographs represent the various series Rocamora has been pursuing since taking on a career as a documentary photographer in the 1980s. These include the series America’s Second-Class Veterans that captured the plight of the Filipino war veterans. In his regular visits to the Philippines, Rocamora explored themes focusing on the homeless, informal settlers, the maternity ward and the Japayukis. At times, personal bonds are established with his subjects. He is able to capture images that are poignant but not necessarily hopeless conditions.

THE FRENCH VOICE MASTERCLASS AT THE CCP: A DOOR OF OPPORTUNITY FOR ASPIRING OPERA SINGERS
by Menchi Mantaring
Songs and Symphony with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) was held on April 28, 2012 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) marked the culmination of a one-week voice masterclass organized by the Paris Conservatory. This Francophil event presented by the French Embassy, the Alliance Francaise de Manille and Rustan’s together with the Cultural Center of the Philippines featured seven classical singers on their way to a singing career, who performed excerpts from selected operas.
The concert’s success was the result of the hard work and dedication of mentor Florence Guignolet and her colleague Stephane Werchowski from the Paris Conservatory who worked with the singers for a week long masterclass held at the St. Scholatica’s College and the CCP. The singers were not only taught the right vocal technique for the various roles, but also acting, language and diction.
The concert was conducted by French Maestro Michael Cousteau whose return this year continues the collaboration he began with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra which started three years ago, as its guest conductor during its 2008-2009 Season.
The singers were sopranos Maria Krissan Manikan, Myramae Meneses, Jade Riccio and Elainne Marie Vibal; tenors Ivan Niccolo Nery and Emmanuel de la Rosa; and baritone Jilbert Chua. They were selected based on their submitted applications to the French Embassy.
Soprano Maria Krissan Manikan was chosen to continue the second phase of her scholarship at the Paris Conservatory in September 2012. The French vocal experts granted her a one year scholarship after the first masterclass held at the UP College of Music in February last year. Currently working towards a Diplome d’Etudes Musicales, she is taking courses that include the following: voice lessons, coaching, ensemble, choir, drama and musical theater, diction, sight-singing and general aesthetics and masterclasses. In addition, yoga sessions are also given, because it is believed to be helpful to singing and relaxing the voice.
Her study at the Conservatory has given her various opportunities to perform. Her participation as Jacinthe in the opera L’Oie du Caire in Saintes, France in October 2011 merited a review in classiquenews.com. She is currently working on her role as Suor Dolcina in Poulenc’s opera Suor Angelica which is being staged twice this May.
Manikan has also recorded as part of the Jeune Choeur de Paris, and participated in recitals at the Conservatory. A music graduate of Sta. Isabel College under Josefina Garlit-Bailen, she is the first Filipino to study in the Conservatory.
The collaboration with the French has been a successful one that that continues to open many doors of opportunity for Filipino classical singers.

Blanca Li Dance CompanyELEKTRO KIFAn Urban and Hip-Hop Dance
30 May 2012, 8pmTanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater)
The Embassy of France, the Alliance Francaise de Manille and Rustan’s in partnership with the Cultural Center of the Philippines present Electro Kif, the new dance creation of world-renown choreographer Blanca Li and her dancers, on May 30, 8:00 pm at the Little Theatre of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Blanca Li is a world famous choreographer, film director, dancer and actress. As a dancer, she takes on a broad spectrum of physical forms of expression, from Flamenco to Classical, from Ballet to Hip-Hop. With Blanca Li, everything begins, and ends, in the energy of movement and dance.
In Electro Kif, Blanca Li plunges us into the world of tecktonik, an urban dance form that emerged in France in the 2000s. Here, she tells the story of young teenagers in search of an identity. Set in a classroom, playground, gym, and wherever else the youth can express their emotions and impulses, Electro Kif is a spectacular display of physical prowess and twirling antics with beautiful tecktonik routines juxtaposed with techno and classical music.
Blanca Li counts on eight performers chosen not only for their mastery in the field of electro dance, but also for their ability to embody characters on stage.
Electro Kifis a show about the hopes and fears, friendships and rivalries of an all male cast of exceptional young electro dancers. Humourous, thrilling, colourful and anarchic, Electro Kif features a unique soundtrack of a mix of techno with electro house, afrobeat, sampling, and classical music especially composed by Tao Gutierrez. This project offers the latest “French Touch” in urban dance, a phenomenon that challenges our vision of contemporary dance! Definitely a must see!
Electro Kif is on tour in Southeast Asia in May and June 2011. Filipino audiences have a chance to see them on stage in Manila at the Cultural Center of the Philippines on May 30 and in Cebu On May 26.
